The Mask is the perfect to movie to watch when you're just in the mood for something movie. It's a movie you don't have to work too hard to watch, and if you like slapstick comedy you're bound to laugh multiple times throughout the movie. This is classic Jim Carrey, with his crazy voices, brilliant facial expressions, and quotes that you may not have even realized were from this movie, such as "Smokinnnn'." The Mask doesn't try too hard, which is what makes it enjoyable. It spoofs classic movie scenes like Clint Eastwood's famous line, "Do you feel lucky, well do ya, punk?" and every cartoon known to man (like when The Mask falls multiple stories just to flatten like a pancake, then lift himself off the pavement). Writer Mark Verheiden does a great job with the comedic tone, and the crime/film-noir theme. Check out his IMDB page (click his name), Verheiden actually writes for Smallville, Heroes, and Battlestar Galactica.
There's a couple of really cool things about The Mask. First, this is Cameron Diaz's first movie. She does an excellent job playing the foxy Tina Carlyle. I'm not gonna lie, Cameron Diaz, at 22 years old = absolute SMOKESHOW. The combination of the centaur that is Alex Rodriguez and Justin Timberlake probably did something to make her age at a quicker rate. Either way she's gorgeous in the movie and you can't take your eyes off her.
The other cool thing is that, Peter Riegert, who played Boon in Animal House, is Lt. Mitch Kellaway. I watched the movie for about an hour before I figured out that it was Boon, but it was so satisfying when I figured it out.
*EDIT* (My Buddy had some things to say...) Don't forget about the color schemes and cartoonish style throughout the whole movie. While it has the film noir feel it also is very expressionistic with a lot of the settings and scene design especially at the Coco Bongo. The "Jim Carre...y show" was great as he played two different characters while constantly breaking the forth wall as "the mask" which is done a lot in cartoons and even once comedically accepting an "oscar" from the audience for his "death" scene as a cowboy.
